Fogging for West Nile in Part of Los Gatos Tonight

Aug. 22, 2007
Categorized in: Los Gatos Events

Mosquitoes infected with West Nile and birds dead from the virus have been found in the area where Los Gatos, Saratoga, Campbell and San Jose meet. The area will be fogged tonight. The program has been effective in other parts of the valley.  (To see the boundaries, see the county's description here.)

The chemicals are not supposed to be harmful to humans or pets and are said to dissipate with sunlight. But cautious folks may want to keep their windows closed between 11pm and 5am just the same, The county also suggests covering fish ponds, taking kids' toys inside, turning off air conditioning units during the fogging and staying indoors.

The county has a wealth of information about the way in which it is addressing the eradication of West Nile online on its Vector Control page. Additionally, one can sign up for email alerts on the West Nile Virus at that page too.

Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus were found recently on the Cambrian-Los Gatos Border. In response, parts of San Jose and Los Gatos are scheduled to be fogged this Wednesday, July 25. A community information meeting will be held tomorrow, Monday, July 23rd at 6:30pm (to 8:30pm) at the Santa Clara County Vector Control District (directions).

West Nile Virus on Los Gatos-Cambrian Border

Sick birds, infected with the West Nile Virus, have been found in Cambrian district of San Jose at the Los Gatos border (Union and Los Gatos Almaden area). The Los Gatos Observer published an article that includes a map of the hot spots and the area considered most risky.

Today the vector control people will be flying overhead to see if there are unkept swimming pools (which attract mosquitos, which in turn carry the virus). It is crucial to not leave standing, stagnant water available for mosquitos, especially now. Normally those of us who live in east Los Gatos are not thrilled with the abundance of helicopters flying overhead. But not today. Go for it.
