Local News Falls a Notch

Jul. 8, 2007

Back on April 27, this blog posted local news resources for the Los Gatos area and asked, "Where do you get your news?" about Los Gatos. While Los Gatos is very proud to be a self-contained town, it is also part of the greater Silicon Valley area. And the biggest paper in the area is the San Jose Mercury News.

In recent years, the Merc has been getting worse and worse. That is, there is more fluff and less substance. The real estate section is almost devoid of any real estate news. When there is a real estate story, it's on page one, or it's in the business section, or anywhere but in the Saturday real estate section.

The web has made print newspapers' very existance a challenge. But when there's poor journalism and editing, of course that will worsen things. Sadly, the Merc recently laid off 31 seasoned reporters. Surely this will not remedy the problem.  Local radio station KLIV's Robert Kieve wrote a commentary on this sad situation and properly called this a loss not only for those journalists, but the community as well. Well said.
