I just installed my copy of FrontPage 2003 on my new Vista pc. The installation seemed to be straight forward, with no issues. However on my first use when I tried to save my changes, I got this error message:

"Server Error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "J:\Brians Documents\my web ccc\cccweb\_vti_pvt\service.lck" Please check the file permissions."

I have no clue what the "_vti_pvt\service.lck" is; means; or relates to. The rest is my external HD path.

If anyone can help, let me know, and thanks.

Hi Brian, should be a pretty easy fix. Check out this link.....

If that doesn't fix it, let me know.

I guess I'm the dummy on the block, but I can't find the "website properties folder" dialog box. Can you clue me in?

Thanks, because that would seem to be the problem.

Your Web site files are located on your hard drive (by default, probably under Documents\My Web Sites\xxxxxxx (where "xxxxxxx" is the folder name where you store your Web site files.)

Use Windows Explorer to locate that folder, right-click on the folder name and select PROPERTIES to open the Web site's folder properties dialog windows. Click on the GENERAL tab. Under the Attributes section uncheck that READ ONLY option.

No, I'm really not usually this stupid; but Vista has me going.

I right clicked on the My Webs folder (actually I have several and did them all) and did find the read only attribute marked. I unchecked it, windows asked for permission to proceed and it went through the process of changing all the folders/subflolders beneath. When it finished it closed the window and I tried saving; nope, still says it has no permission.

I rechecked the folder properties and the read only attribute was again marked. I repeated this process 6 times, each time with the same result; Vista is not saving the change, but apears (at least to me) to be saving them. I even rebooted after making the change; no good.

Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong? I sure hate being a pain in the *ss, but I'm stumped.

Thanks for your patience.

Hey Brian,

No doubt, Vista permissions can be a big annoyance. From the same link I provided, it says "If this didn't work click on Security >> Your Username >> Give full permission ."

Did you try this(giving your user acct Full Control permissions)? If you are not able to change the permissions, you may need to take "ownership" of the folder. On the Security tab, click Advanced, click the Owner tab, then click the Edit button. From here, you should be able to highlight your username in the "Change Owner To" box, and click OK. If these directions don't make sense, here's a link with some screenshots....

Take ownership in Vista

Well again I've managed to strike out. I followed the suggestions and made sure I had "ownership" of my computer but that just muddied the water when Vista halted all further permission changes with this message:

"Stopping the propagation of permission settings leads to an inconsistent state, in which some objects have the settings but others don't. If you made the change by mistake, you should apply the correct change immediately to achieve a consistent state."

Well what does that mean?

Before that message I had done everything, with no luck. Everytime Vista finished "processing" all the folders and sub folders, nothing really changed.

I hope I'm not wearing out my welcome!

Thanks for any input and help; I really appreciate your time and effort.

You weren't changing the permissions on the whole C: drive, right? You ARE just taking ownership of the "My Webs" folder, correct? Or better yet, just take ownership of the particular site you are working with(which should be a subfolder within My Webs) - then apply full permissions to your user acct for this site(and all folders and files within).

If you were changing the permissions on the whole drive, you will probably need to do a System Restore, using a restore point dated before you tried to make the change. A system restore is surprisingly quite easy to do, and will not delete any of your documents, even ones created after the last restore point....
