Aug. 8, 2006 - What's In Your Dryer Duct?

As you may, or may not know, I am a condo dweller. I am also the President of the Association's Board of Directors. That's why I know that many condo dwellers moved to condominiums so they could live a maintenance free lifestyle.

Sure enough, if you live in condo you probably won't be cutting grass or shoveling snow. The exterior maintenance of the building will be taken care of without an ounce of effort on your part. Nothing to do but sit back and let the board and the management company worry about it, right?

Well no, not really. If you are in possession of an in unit washer and dryer you got some maintenance to do my friend, as I witnessed today when Bob Benedict from General Duct Cleaning in Antioch, IL. dropped by to change my flexible duct between my dryer and the vent line to the roof. Not only was there a cantaloupe sized wad of fuzzy, linty junk removed from the back of the dryer, but there were three or four fabric softener sheets as well. No wonder the association has the common vent lines cleaned out every now and then. Talk about a fire hazard.

So there you have it mi amigos. Clean out those dryer exhausts once in a while so you don't burn up. And while your at it, change the filter in your furnace too. So much for maintenance free living huh?

As always, if you have found yourself receiving my blog postings via e-mail, it is because I have either blogged about you personally, blogged about something I know is of interest to you, or I consider you to be a person of deep thinking and intellect and I would love to have you occasionally commenting on my blog. If you would like to be removed from the list simply send me an e-mail saying so.

An opossum... or there was one last fall... now there's a mesh grate over the dryer vent outside. The dog had alerted us that there was something in or behind the dryer... he tried to get into the dryer drum. We pulled out the dryer...opossums stink... we had noticed a smell a couple of times before... this time when we smelled it and the dog smelled it we and we pulled out the saw the big heavy lump in the duct... it looked like more than a big fuzzy lint ball in that duct. It was an ugly hissing, angry opposum. But listen to Gene condo dwellers in Chicagoland ..clean out your dryer ducts... I could make a small dog from the fur I clean out of mine. Maureen

Here in St. Paul Minnesota flexible ducts of any kind between the dryer and the vent are not allowed because they are a fire hazard. Your association would save money and lives by swapping out the flexible ducts.

Not too long ago, I found a live bird in the dryer duct at one of my listings. It was quite happy to be let out! The sellers were certain that this was a good sign, and sure enough, the home sold shortly thereafter. But still, to show your listing and have the dryer duct rattle at you is odd!
