What I Like About Real Estate

Real estate takes me outdoors to meet and interact with people in positive ways that relate to the satisfaction of one of their most basic needs—shelter. For this reason, if no other, I recognize, along with the framers of the Realtor’s^® code of ethics, that practicing real estate “imposes obligations beyond those of ordinary commerce.”

As early as 1913 the professional arm of real estate, the National Association of Realtors^® developed this insight, expressed it in the preamble of its code of ethics, and identified some of those obligations—support for democratic ideals, fair housing, equal housing, best uses of land, and concern for the environment.

Under all is the land. Upon its wise utilization and widely allocated ownership depend the survival and growth of free institutions and of our civilization. …..the nation and its citizens require the highest and best use of the land and the widest distribution of land ownership. They require the creation of adequate housing, the building of functioning cities, the development of productive industries and farms, and the preservation of a healthful environment.

I like being guided by the compass of the code as I go about the business of helping people fulfill their dreams of homeownership. I get tremendous satisfaction from enabling win-win negotiations, and hope that I never complete a transaction without intentionally attempting to contribute in some measure to the fulfillment of the obligations enshrined in the code. I appreciate the opportunities for helping people, for interpersonal exchanges, and for the freedom to build a business of my own. In addition, I enjoy having a fantastic product to sell—a state that is justifiably called “the land of enchantment” with Albuquerque, a city that is highly ranked among the best cities in which to live.
