Palm Pre Owners and Maybe Owners

ALL smartphones takes patience - in my mind. You need to want them to work - that is what I told my husband yesterday when I gave him a Storm for his birthday (65th)! Have used Palm 700p for 2 years and LOVE it - it does everything I need, including opening lockboxes. Yes, there have been hours/days of frustration at times - but worth the effort Stay with it and you will be glad you did.

Dick, I think your explanation about the battery is right. My battery today lasted much much longer than before. Still want to get the magnetic plug in battery...seems like all the stores are out of them.
Loved the calculator on the Palm 700P..hoping to get it back on the Pre. Very much enjoying the phone!
I am noticing that the battery on my Pre does not last long. I had to stop getting my emails on there, which was a pain for me anyways since I am
at my home office enough in a day to get all my emails in my office. I mosly wanted my emails to come to me when I choose to get them, like it happened on my Treo, so I think I've got that worked out.
So far I love the feel of this phone and I am already used to the touch screen so much so that when I went back on my Treo, I forgot it wasn't that same kind of screen. I haven't given up my Treo 700P with
Verizon yet because I am testing.
Please let us all know how your Pre is going for you.

I took my email account off my Pre and I decided that I would just put
it back on when I am out of town and want to get my emails on my phone.
On my Treo 700p, I would just click on GET MAIL when I wanted to
but with the Pre the mail just keeps coming and since I am at my office
enough of the day, I didn't need it in both locations all day every day.
On Friday, I am meeting with my Mac Wizard who is the guy I turn
to (he does phone consultations) when I have Mac issues. He is a
iPhone guy and he wants to check out my Pre and I want to check out
his iPhone. I do like this Pre because of how it looks and how it feels and because I was pretty much able to set it up all by myself, but I'm
not marrying it just yet.

On my Treo I am able to set the time for an email download...every 5 min...15, etc... LOOK UNDER OPTION , PREFERENCES.

Ya well, I didn't want that - I only want to get my emails when I am out of town and away from a computer. Besides this is the PRE list and we're talking about the PRE.

Debbie,
I know you pointed out that this is a PRE conversation, but the Centro may be similar enough to be relevant.
Centro email settings allow you to configure by account how often it pulls email, a start and end time each day, and which days of the week. I don't know if reducing the frequency will boost battery time or not. However, I notice that if I am somewhere with weak or limted service my Centro battery life is significantly shortened. I believe this is the case with any phone as it works extra to find a signal. If you've changed carriers and your signal isn't as strong as it was before in places you spend a lot of time, this may be contributing.
Overall, battery life on my Centro isn't great and often at the end of a day of business it is alerting me that it's almost dead. I've not heard the same complaint from Blackberry users I know. Keep in mind these are comments about a Centro, so may be irrelevant.
Why not set your phone to only retrieve email every 12 hours? Then, when you are away from your computer and want to retrieve it manually you can just "get" email, or whatever the function is called on the PRE.

Dick,
This is the "Mom of 8 in Real Estate" taking your technology advice for the "get back in the game" kinda mom. I have not yet purchased my PRE but am planning to. Is there any advice out there for someone who has never used a smartphone (only the dumb phones!) who would like to know if you were setting up all over again from the beginning what would you do the same? differently? Is there any difference between purchasing the phone at Best Buy or directly from Sprint carriers?
By the way, I loved your classes!
Michelle
I am in the last few days of my 30 day trial time and I have to tell you that I think I'm returning this PRE. It is a fabulous phone and if it wasn't for Sprint I'd probably keep it. I like many things about it. I was able to go from
HELP (Beatles) as my main ringtone to THRILLER (Michael Jackson
as a tribute and I loved that. Also, I could sync all my iTunes and as many photos as I wanted to carry and I loved that.
The main issue is that the reception of Sprint is bad. Just today I had
3 calls drop and when I do connect with people I often hear my own voice echo back to me and that is bad. Plus the other person is constantly cutting out and that is unprofessional to say the least.
I think I will get a Centro since they aren't expensive and wait to see what happens in the smartphone market in the next 6-12 months.
I haven't shut down my Verizon account so all I have to do is return the PRE. I'm sad about it but glad to finally decide. Also, if it wasn't that
my 700p was so big I'd probably just keep it. I have been very lucky
with it no problems at all!
How's all the other Pre users doing?
Debbie G
Not sure if everyone has heard, but AT & T is no longer carrying Palm phones & will not be carrying the Pre either. You can buy an unlocked version & they will walk you thru downloading their apps, but won't guarantee that it will work. I was really excited about the Pre, but it doesn't look like it will work with my lockbox anyhow. AT & T no longer carries any phones with IR, so I now have to carry another device (fob) which is why I pay for the upgraded service to have an ekey.
Now I don't know what phone to purchase that will have the capabilities I need as a calendar, phone, safe mls key, ekey, task manager, etc. I really like the touch screen, don't like blackberry's (my husband has one). Don't want the Iphone (I have heard a lot of bad reviews). Any suggestions?
