Community Spotlight: Historic Gruene and New Braunfels

Jan. 14, 2008
Categorized in: Texas Cities and Towns

I took a trip to New Braunfels this past weekend. I'd been hearing about rapid growth in the area, so wanted to see for myself. New Braunfels and the Gruene (pronounced, "green") Historic District are our Destination Spotlight for this week.

Gruene_mansionNew Braunfels,Texas is a sleepy town about 30 miles South of Austin on the way to San Antonio. The areas is a getaway destination for busy professionals in Central Texas as well as out of state visitors.

College students from San Marcos and Austin also visit during the summer for fun on the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers.

View the short photo tour below of new construction in the area. Click the photos to view a larger version.

"GRUENE GARDEN" LUXURY GARDEN VILLA COMMUNITY

I liked a small subdivision located on Gruene Road called "Gruene Garden". The garden homes looked large in comparison to other garden homes I've seen. (BELOW)

Each home had metal roofs, wooden garage doors, full sod and landscaping, at least three sides stone or brick, and high-end finishes inside.

ADDITIONAL CRAFTSMAN-STYLE NEW CONSTRUCTION

Three high-end duplexes were nearby (PHOTOS BELOW). They showcased a similar Craftsman-style look, which is popular in the Texas Hill Country.

MIXED-USE DEVELOPMENT IS ON THE WAY TO NEW BRAUNFELS

Below are photos of the commercial component of the small Gruene Garden community in New Braunfels. So far, it looked like there were plans of a small coffee shop, salon and other small shops.

Another welcome sight was a very large mixed-use master-planned community right off Common Street called Sundance Park. A lake was in the works as well as at least 200 homes.
