North San Antonio Steps up Shopping and Entertainment

Dec. 20, 2007
I  visited my hometown of San Antonio this past Thanksgiving. It was fascinating to tour the city and see new mixed-use developments, shopping districts, and family entertainment complexes.

Shopping San Antonio has some of the best theme parks, historic architecture, and golf courses in the nation, so it's a great place for retirees, golfers and tourists. When growing up in San Antonio in the 80s and 90s, however, the city was a boring place to be for young people. That seems to be changing, especially in Northeast and Northwest San Antonio.

BEST "NEW" SAN ANTONIO ENTERTAINMENT & SHOPPING AREAS FOR ALL AGES

San Antonio is doing a great job of attracting large commercial ventures to fill in the need for family entertainment and shopping for all ages. Many of the shopping districts are attracting residential multifamily or building this component into the development during latter phases.

  • The Forum at Olympia Parkway is near my parent's house in Northeast San Antonio near the intersection of I-35 North and Loop 1604. I left San Antonio in 1995 for college. I still remember the day I drove to visit my parents and suddenly saw this development with every retail shop and restaurant you'd need during a family shopping trip. The Forum is impressive at over 1.2M square feet of rentable building area.
  • Alamo Quarry Market. Built in 1998, Alamo Quarry Market is a 580,000 square-feet of open-air shopping shopping, dining and entertainment. I visited two Austin originals, Amy's Ice cream and Wholefoods at the Quarry. An upscale specialty retail project called Quarry Crossing is near it with about 56,000 square feet that includes specialty retail and theme restaurants.
  • Quarry Village will be within walking distance to the Alamo Quarry. This upcoming 12.74-acre mixed-use development will include 103,000 square feet of retail and 280 luxury apartments. Palladiumimax
  • The Rim Entertainment Complex near Six Flags Fiesta Texas in Northwest San Antonio was a blast. At 800-acres, the mixed-use development was almost overwhelming due to it's size. The residential wasn't completed, but most of the shopping and entertainment was on the ground. My family went to the Santikos Palladium IMAX movie theatre, which has 3-D IMAX screens available.
  • Overlook at The Rim just began construction this month.  This 9.89 acre office project is pretty exciting because it rounds out the retail and residential at The Rim.
