She also knows about cancer. </p> <p> The mother of five, a surfing icon in the 1970s, was diagnosed in 1986 with malignant melanoma on her hip. </p> <p> Pregnant with her second child, Poppler was forced into having the cancer removed by surgery. It also meant she had to lose her growing fetus. </p> <p> &quot;My husband (Dr. Greg Bartlow) is a cancer reconstruction surgeon and dermatology specialist, but another cancer surgeon had to go in and take a football of meat out of my hip,&quot; Poppler said in a 2000 interview. &quot;It was like the tip of an iceberg. They didn&#39;t know how long I had to live, and they had to take the baby. I went through so much trauma. </p> <p> &quot;After that, I didn&#39;t go to the doctor for 10 years, and when I did finally go, they didn&#39;t find anything. I&#39;m like in this one percentile. It helped that I have a good attitude, but I&#39;m a rare example. It&#39;s like, &#39;I&#39;m here. <p> Saturday, June 28th </p> <p> 29th Annual <a href="http://obstreetfair.com/">Ocean Beach Street Fair</a> </p> <p> Vendors, Food, Artists Alley, Chili Cook off and Fireworks Festival </p> <p> It gets pretty crowded so get there early if you want to try the chili and don&#39;t want to park a million miles away. This is is a guaranteed good time. A great place to people watch for sure!! </p>

<p>So, Street Scene has been pretty much my favorite annual San Diego event for years and years... but for the past 2 or three years it's had a lot of trouble finding a home.&nbsp; Last year it was held in the parking lot at Coors Ampitheatre... Kind of lame if you ask me, I mean it's called STREET Scene... and I thought the whole point was that it took over the STREETS downtown...</p> <p>I read <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20080326-9999-1m26scene.html">this</a> article Matt sent me, and I mean, I get why they don't want it to return to its home in the Gaslamp (too much construction, too many new condos, not a lot of open space like there used to be) but I don't know... I think Seaport Village could work... It would be WAY better then some parkinglot 30miles from downtown...</p> <p>What do you think?</p>

<p> This sounds like an interesting festival. Looks like it&#39;ll be great food and music down at Spanish Landing by the big bay. My girls would probably love to dance to some Cajun/Zydeco music, and my favorite local blues band(Bill Magee) will be playing. Don&#39;t think I&#39;d wanna go on Mother&#39;s Day, but maybe Saturday. Anybody going?
