Any pros/cons on Mike Ferry's Superstar Sales Retreat?

As always, thanks in advance!

Sally,

I spent about 5 years in and/or doing the Mike Ferry seminars and Superstar conferences. I learned a great deal and it helped me increase my business. This was before wonderful advances in technology, before websites, before RealTalk or e-Pro. I was in one of his original Mastermind groups of top producers. The best part of that group was traveling around to the other members locations and doing our own little weekend - learning how the other group members ran their business, what worked for them, etc. It was a fantastic sharing of information that was invaluable to me.

Mike has his own style. I tried doing things the "Mike" way. I decided that I had to make adaptations to his suggestions - ones that fit my personality and general character make-up.

In my opinion, attending or participating really just depends on you. Do you need a change? Are you new in the business? Do you want to learn how to potentially grow your business? Needless to say, there are tons of products available to buy. It is a great place to network and nothing beats
a face-to-face opportunity. I have no regrets. Good luck on your decision!

I haven't attended a Ferry workshop in quite some time. He is big on
scripts and that's good. In fact, it's a darn good way to stay in control of a listing interview. My problem with Ferry was that he professes what is a very pushy, almost rude and demanding approach. Of course, like all the rest of he so-called real estate gurus, h'e going to push his retreats and coaching. Both are quite expensive and, frankly, I don't think they are worth the money.
I speak from experience on this because I dropped about three grand on his coaching a number of years ago. I didn't care for the coach. He didn't really have much time for me and fewer ideas. I don't
think much of any of these real estate coaches/gurus. I don't believe they offer anything that the average agent could not come up with on his/her own. For about $25 I recommend the book "The Millionare Real Estate Agent" by Gary Keller. It's a very well-reasoned approach to the business.

I too have been involved with different coaching companies:
Mike Ferry; WAY over priced. $1000 per month. Bottom line, they teach you to prospect over the phone...cold calling fsbos and expireds. Thats it.
Buffini: $400 per month. Bottom line. Mail stuff to your past clients, friends and family once per month. Re-read what I just wrote..and that will save you $4800. Not worth the money.
Tom Ferry: I canceled their program after a couple months. Not impressed.
I am currently being coaching by www.harrisrealestateuniversity.com
Their programs are really cool. For example, they have a prospecting program (I am signing up this week) that is less than $100 per month and has everything that I had previously paid $12,000 for. I am not kidding.
I have already taken their short sale program and as a result I closed 14 short sales last year.
Hope this helps for people looking for advice on hiring a coach. Of all the companies I have used Harris is the best.

Rhymes With Ferry

A couple of things. First, the largest real estate company in Arizona (based on number of agents) is now Homesmart. Homesmart was already pretty damn big but on Tuesday it was finalized - they bought Dan Schwartz Realty. Dan Schwartz Realty was, itself, was already one of the top 3 companies in the state for number of agents. So was Homesmart. It is my understanding that - at least for now - both companies will continue to operate with their current names.

A Little Bird Told Me

And now for the “big” news. I’ve just received a report that Mike Ferry’s coaching business is falling off. Big time. I have long considered him a predator, so I am happy to hear this. His company has had a pattern of high pressuring agents (who attend his free seminars) to sign up for coaching. Coaching is pretty much all he really sells - his events being a giant sales pitch for getting coached by his organization. For those who don’t follow the Mike Ferry coaching advice or who find it unworkable they are in for an additional shock, besides not having all that additional income they were sure to get. If they attempt to cancel their relationship they discover - as they have signed a contract - their account will be turned over to a collection agency.

It now happens that the state of California (EDD) recently ruled that all the coaches (I think he has averaged about 60 coaches at any given time since 1999) he has been paying as independent contractors are legally employees. Mike appealed and lost. Prediction: a big fine will soon be levied by California and I’m guessing the IRS will soon do the same. Also, from the very same little bird: a lawsuit from ex-coaches will soon be filed and made public to recover any money not recovered via the taxing agencies. My prediction: he will be out of money before any of them can collect anything.

Mike, once you see this you can have one of your attorneys send me a nice threatening letter. Here is my contact information.
