The Web Women Giving Circle is presently raising money and donations for CARE, a leading humanitarian organization fighting global poverty. We place special focus on working with poor women because, equipped with the proper resources, women have the power to help whole families and entire communities escape poverty.--Joeann Fossland, Web Women Giving Circle Leader
The Web Women Giving Circle has raised almost $40,000 for CARE. We are regrouping and getting ready to launch fundraising efforts that will collect the balance of $100,000 that we pledged two years ago. We invite all existing WWGC members and new members to join us on Dec.10, 2008 for a meeting online where we will talk about CARE and design a strategy to raise awareness and dollars for humanitarian relief.
If you are interested in joining us on Dec. 10, 2008 9 PM EST, 6 PM PST, e-mail Frances Flynn Thorsen or Joeann Fossland and we will contact you with details about the teleconference. The following video tells something about the "Why" of our commitment.
Web Women Giving Circle Founder Joeann Fossland has commenced holiday posting on our "other" blog, Inspiring Woman. Click the photo for Joeann's tribute to her daughter, visit the blog for inspiration, and make a post of your own. The $10 donation fare is donated to CARE, of course! An excerpt from the post:
"You are sharing your magic touch with everyone who is lucky enough to get a massage or facial....
"You awed me when you combined work, school and mothering, because you didn't let the pressure get to you and took care of Lily so she always knew she was surrounded by love!
"I Love you!!!!"
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays from the Web Women Giving Circle.
I've launched my virtual tour for CARE to promote the Real Estate Premiums Package and the Shopping Alliance and Book Clubsponsored by the Web Women Giving Circle for CARE. We could use a few more bloggers to participate. In a nutshell, we set a date, I post it on my website as an event with links and love and hugs to you. Then, on the set date, you post an interview (we'll conduct it via email, to keep it easy on everyone) that we call a stop on the CARE tour and everyone clicks through that day to read and love your blog (or web site). Book a date here!-- Joeann Fossland, Founder, Web Women Giving Circle
More Magazine editor Peggy Northrop (left in photo) sat down with Web Women Giving Circle founder Joeann Fossland last week in Tucson and talked about CARE. Here are highlights of their discussion.
JF: What Strikes you about CARE's works?
PN: More’s readers broke down barriers in the workplace, in politics, in media. We believe we can change the world because we have done it—and as we age, we increasingly turn our focus outward. When I was introduced to the work that CARE does, I knew I had found a way to channel this generation’s altruism and activism.
JF: When you close your eyes and look into your heart, what do you see in the "before" and "after" of CARE reaching out to a woman in the Third World? ...and how does it feel to know that "More" is a party to change in women's lives? We are having fun with this challenge-it certainly is stretching us!
PN: By giving women who face unimaginable challenges not just tangible resources but education, we can see into the future and envision a world in which these women make life better for their families and their communities. And for the women who read More -- active, experienced, wordly, involved, problem-solving women -- CARE’s mission matches their goal to give back. This generation of women, now over 40, has made its own way in the world, so we have a special understanding of the influence, imagination and commitment of women everywhere—no matter what their circumstances. We have seen first-hand what happens when women achieve power and have a greater voice, which is exactly what CARE does in 70 countries around the world.

CARE President Helene D. Gayle recently returned from Bangladesh. She joined Rigoberto Giron, director of CARE's emergency unit yesterday and spoke by phone about recent trips and CARE's role and challenges in recent emergencies, focusing on the crisis in Darfur and their work with Somalian refugees in the Dadaab camps in Kenya. Web Women Giving Circle Founder Joeann Fossland was there. The following is a collection of comments by all three. Comments have been paraphrased for brevity.
JF: I am pleased and honored to share my thoughts about a phone call yesterday with Dr. Helene Gayle and Rigoberto Giron. I was particularly struck with Dr. Gayle's description of job training and opportunities that help men feed their families. When these opportunities are not sustainable, many of these men become mercenaries so that they can have a source of income. What a terrible dilemma for a father to have to face.
JF: Helping men and women with micro-business hits home with me because it is what we are attempting to do with the Web Women Giving Circle, take this project in small steps. One small donation can enable one person buy seeds or flour to bake bread. Each and every donation we get is going to touch the life of someone who, up to now, hasn't had the means to take care of themselves.
HG: We help people worldwide. We don't take a political stand. We are in countries where the need is great regardless of the politics of the government. We don't give money directly to governments. We work through them but we do not feed their treasuries.
Joeann Fossland JF: While I know many are opposed to what they perceive as handouts, we must understand that many people are in situations that they cannot control. When marauding gangs come into your village and home and take all you have, as well as impacting your spirit through acts of rape and violence, we are not providing handouts, we are providing a way to rebuild self esteem.
RG: The Darfur conflict erupted in early 2003. Fighting among various factions has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced more than 2 million, most escaping to larger towns where they stay in camps for "internally displaced people," and some crossing the border into Chad, where they live in refugee camps, straining local resources. Attacks on civilians during the conflict have been brutal and include burning homes, killing and rape. CARE has worked in Sudan for over two decades. We been active in Darfur since April 2004 and currently provide direct humanitarian assistance to over 450,000 war-affected people. Some 1.6 people do not have homes. CARE's work includes water and sanitation, community services and distribution of food and other relief items.

Master Coach Joeann Fossland, leader of the Web Women Giving Circle, and publisher of the Web Women Giving Circle Blog, was named one of the Top 10 Women Real Estate Bloggers 2006 by Sellsius Real Estate Blog:
"Real Estate blogging is in its infancy. The few of us that are blogging today do it because we love real estate and we have unique expertise and experience to share with others. One thing we are truly excited about is the growing trend of passionate female Broker/Agent bloggers that are making their mark as pioneers of real estate blogging. They all have one thing in common that makes them shine - the power of knowledge gained through hands on experience. We applaud them because they set examples for the next generation of Brokers and Agents. They are respected by their peers and cherished by their clients and customers. They have strong opinions which make them stand out from the crowd. They set new standards for all to follow. If we had a prize to offer we would give it to them but we don’t. All we can say is THANK YOU!"--sellsius blog
Joeann Fossland's recent blog post Negotiate Like a Pro was cited as a favorite blog entry. We couldn't agree more!!

"I decided to start the Web Women Giving Circle in direct response to the CARE More Giving Circle Challenge. My coaching business serves women all over the country and I am blessed to work with women who are very successful in their businesses. My vision was to assemble a group of women who share a common goal to make a BIG difference in the lives of disadvantaged women in other parts of our world.
"I have watched and admired CARE for years from afar. CARE is an organization that awes and inspires me with the work it does, the people that it touches, and the difference it makes in the quality of life for so many people on this planet.
"One of my life purposes is to empower others to live creative, joy-filled lives. Working with women and girls is particularly exciting and rewarding. I've enjoyed More Magazine because the articles are relevant and their values are aligned with mine. When I read about their challenge, it was a perfect fit. To raise this money to benefit the women and children through CARE is a joyful undertaking.
"I love the More goal of raising a million dollars! I thought, 'It would be wonderful to make a meaningful contribution to that goal!'
"I realized immediately that my friends would be the perfect people to make that happen. The Web Women Giving Circle is growing and presently includes 15 members from the U.S. and Australia. We are not geographically limited. We call ourselves the Web Women Giving Circle because our members use the Internet with great success in their work and fund raising efforts. We have tens of thousands of newsletter subscribers among us and highly trafficked web sites. We are counting on support from these spheres of influence and several of these ladies are donating a portion of programs they offer to this cause for the rest of the year.
"We are brainstorming on conference calls about ways to use our resources to leverage and maximize donations. Members are making personal donations and planning outreach efforts to reach a very ambitious goal. We will do what it takes achieve that goal."--Joeann Fossland

Can you spare $20? If you can, I want to extend an invitation to you to use it to make a difference with impoverished women. (and it's ok to send more if you want! :>) I am excited about starting The Web Women Giving Circle. For 2006, we will be supporting the CARE More Challenge. More Magazine is partnering with CARE to help fund the organization's mission to eradicate poverty by working with women in 70 countries worldwide.
"We know how much women enjoy being with their friends and doing things together, so we are inviting women across the country to join together in 'giving circles' to benefit CARE's work around the globe," says Peggy Northrop, editor-in-chief of More. "Millions of women and girls live on less than one dollar a day, and empowering them is the key to lifting their communities out of poverty. The best part for me, is that our winning group -- the Giving Circle who raises the most money by the end of the year -- will get to travel to Peru with me on a volunteer vacation and see CARE's work up close."
