"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. The world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its labourers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
--Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890–1969)

A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of exiles.

Web Women Giving Circle Leader Invites
New Members to Join Philanthropic Group

Can you spare $20? If you can, I want to extend an invitation to you to use it to make a difference with impoverished women. (and it's ok to send more if you want! :>) I am excited about starting The Web Women Giving Circle. For 2006, we will be supporting the CARE More Challenge. More Magazine is partnering with CARE to help fund the organization's mission to eradicate poverty by working with women in 70 countries worldwide.

"We know how much women enjoy being with their friends and doing things together, so we are inviting women across the country to join together in 'giving circles' to benefit CARE's work around the globe," says Peggy Northrop, editor-in-chief of More. "Millions of women and girls live on less than one dollar a day, and empowering them is the key to lifting their communities out of poverty. The best part for me, is that our winning group -- the Giving Circle who raises the most money by the end of the year -- will get to travel to Peru with me on a volunteer vacation and see CARE's work up close."

You can  donate here or by making your check out to CARE and mailing it to Joeann Fossland, P.O. Box 133, Cortaro, AZ 85652

OR......If you are willing to really play big and join as one of the Circle Members,

Join the Web Women Giving Circle!

Simply register by emailing me at CAREMore@joeann.com and I will send pertinent information to you by E-mail.--Joeann Fossland, MCC, e-PRO, GRI, PMN

Bush's Elementary 'ABC' AIDS Campaign Buys
Political Favor, Not Relief For Those At Risk

President Bush's ABC approach to AIDS promotes Abstinence, Being faithful, and correct and consistent use of Condoms. Restrictions passed by Congress require that at least one third of HIV prevention be spend on abstinence-until-marriage programs.

Tell that to Mpolokeng in South Africa:

" In 1984, she married her high school sweetheart. Her husband left to work as a miner in South Africa and was seldom home. He returned for good when he became too ill to work, and Mpolokeng took care of him. In 2005 her husband died, and Mpolokeng started to feel sick as well. She went to be tested and found out she was HIV-positive."  [CARE]

Tell that to Gatrude in Uganda::

"Every day she remains in the sex trade is another day she puts herself at risk of contracting HIV. She knows the risk, but she has no other options to put food on the table for her children. 'It's not by choice I do this work,' Gatrude says. 'If I had an alternative, I would stop this work immediately'." [CARE]

Tell that to Fauster in Rwanda:

"Her husband died when she was six months pregnant; people told her he died from AIDS, but she didn't understand, and thought he had been poisoned. Before she gave birth, she went in for pre-natal care and tested positive for HIV."  [CARE]

It's not too late to challenge the arbitrary restrictions that current policy places on U.S. funding for HIV prevention. CARE supports recent legislation introduced by Sens. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, to strengthen HIV prevention efforts by providing greater flexibility to organizations like CARE that confront the AIDS pandemic every day. Help us build momentum for this important initiative by asking your senators to co-sponsor the HIV Prevention for Youth Act today.

Danish Philanthropist Shares Exclusive Photos
With Web Women Giving Circle Blog

The images of poverty are a stark contrast to the sheer loveliness of the island Madagascar off the eastern coast of Africa. CARE is busy there, and so is Birte Thorsen, a retired teacher from Denmark whose stories and photos will appear in this blog in the days ahead. The compelling images in the banner title and the blog published to date are photos that Birte Thorsen has taken on her trips to Madagascar. If you are moved to align the human condition with the loveliness of this great earth, please make a donation to CARE. Donate here.

CARE Issues Peace Plea To Mideast Leaders

July 20, 2006 — The escalation of the conflict in Lebanon, Israel and in the West Bank and Gaza has created a humanitarian disaster. Hundreds of thousands of people have fled their homes and many more are without access to basic, life preserving services. The number of civilians killed and injured in all three locations is rising as each day passes.

CARE urges all parties of the conflict to protect the lives of civilians, especially children, in accordance with International Humanitarian Law.

CARE urges the international community to ensure humanitarian access in order to mitigate the pain and suffering experienced by those unfortunate enough to be caught in the violence.

CARE calls on the international community to take immediate action to resolve the crisis through peaceful means.

CARE has worked in the region since 1948, beginning in Israel and now in the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Jordan. In coordination with other humanitarian agencies, CARE is significantly expanding relief operations to accommodate the growing need.

Calling All Vendors!
Silent eBay Auction Will Benefit CARE

The Web Women Giving Circle, a group of real-estate related professionals, is organizing a fund raiser for CARE, a charity organization.

CARE’s Mission
CARE tackles underlying causes of poverty so that people can become self-sufficient. Recognizing that women and children suffer disproportionately from poverty, CARE places special emphasis on working with women to create permanent social change. Women are at the heart of CARE’s community-based efforts to improve basic education, prevent the spread of HIV, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity and protect natural resources. CARE also delivers emergency aid to survivors of war and natural disasters, and helps people rebuild their lives.

Committed to Raising $100K
As a group, our circle has committed to raising $100K this year for CARE. As part of this goal, we are creating an auction of real estate and business-related products and services online at eBay to raise money and we’d like your help. We need items to be donated for the auction. Members of the Giving Circle are donating coaching services, book proceeds, virtual assistant services, and other products to the cause. We are doing it because we believe in the cause and because it’s a great business decision!

Donating is a GREAT Business Decision
We ask our donors for several things. First, we ask for a donation. Then we ask them for a description of their product or service and photographs to support an ad on eBay. Then (and here’s the important part), we ask them to help us promote the auction by sending out word to all of their clients that the auction is happening. By doing this with each donor and with each member of our group, every donor gets exposure to an exponentially larger mailing list. This kind of advertising you cannot buy. It tells prospective clients not only what your product does, but that the people behind the product care about others. This type of marketing worked for Ben and Jerry’s Ice Cream, and it can work for you too.

Win-Win-Win
So, think about it.  What can you offer us as your donation to this worthy cause? We will running auctions through the end of the year. So if you want to offer us multiple packages of your services, we are happy to accept them. If we have enough, we will space them out in the auction, so your product is listed continuously. Dig deep. This is a great cause. And this format offers us a unique opportunity to do good for others while also helping your business. It’s a win for CARE, it’s a win for your company, and it’s a win for the people who buy the products off the auction. What could be better?

We will list all of the contributors in various venues. We hope that you will be inspired….
