Real Estate and Then Some in Central NJ

Local real estate is the jumping off point for thoughts and conversations that can span a wide range of topics, from transportation to government and politics to food and wine. I will try to keep it pertinent to the local area, which would be Somerset, Morris, and Hunterdon counties. Feel free to comment on anything I post here. The quality of the schools is one of the most important factors to families looking for a new home. Of course, when asked "Is that a good school?" I often have difficulty answering, because of the subjectivity of the question. Something the Smiths must have for their kids at school may not even show up on the radar of the Jones. So I point to a few different resources, and help people do the research to see if what they want is represented at a school. Schools & school districts have web sites that offer up a lot of information, including faculty phone numbers. I always recommend a call to the school principal, to talk about the school and how it addresses the needs of your children. If, by the way, you want any of these web site addresses or school phone numbers, just ask and I'll get them to you.
Additionally, I suggest a look at the NJ School Report card. The NJ Department of Education issues a report card every year for every school in the state. The reports include a great deal of data such as class sizes, average expenditure per child, average scores on standardized tests, percentage of graduates going on to colleges, and compliance with the "No Child Left Behind" regulations. Report cards for the 2005/2006 school year have just been released, and can be found at the NJ Dept. of Education web site. Go check out your own school, or perhaps the schools in a district to which you are considering moving. If you don't want to go through the exercise of finding a specific school, or don't know what school would be the right one for a particular address, let me know and I'll be happy to e-mail a specific report to you.
