there was a building in Montana or Wyoming I saw shaped like that....It was a double decker outhouse.....

Zoning is a good idea too....where I live if the footprint is 120 square feet or less you don't need a Building inspector.....I have thought of doing the same thing here somedays......

here in SF the standard lot, of course, is 25 feet wide. there are some, however, that are half that. during my brief stint as a residential realtor i saw two places that were 12.5 feet wide. the owners had to get very creative. how very baltimore of them.
