Find out about that 55+ Community you are buying!

Apr. 29, 2008

The best way to learn everything you need to know about a 55+ community is to speak with the residents who live there. Residents will tell you the truth about what is happening in a community, the good, the bad, and the gossip!

The Good is always good to hear. Finances are in order, maintenance is kept up with, low increases in the monthly Association Fee, snow was plowed on time. You’ll also want to hear that people know their neighbors, people look after each other’s homes when they are away, the Softball Team won their last game. Communities take time to develop, and they develop by close interpersonal relationships, team building and many kindnesses along the way.

The Bad is important to know. Ask if there have been any assessments for maintenance or construction projects which is required. Find out if neighbors are happy with the maintenance. Do the grounds look well kept? Is the Clubhouse or Common Areas clean and in good order? If there are problems you’ll hear it first and quickly if neighbors are unhappy with the way things are being managed in the community.

What is the best way to talk with a neighbor? Take time to visit without your Realtor or salesperson. Take a walk on the walking trail or linger around the Clubhouse and say “Hello” to anyone who walks by. Ask if you could share a moment of their time and just listen to what they have to say. You’ll hear the good or bad very quickly and you’ll get plenty of information on what is going on in the community.

Another resource is www.55plusresales.com  which offers contact with residents of 55+ communities on their website. Find a community you are interested in, drop you information to them in an email, and you’ll get connected with a neighbor or board member who can let you know what is going by phone or email. It’s a great way to be certain the community you are considering really offers everything you want in a neighborhood!
